Catalogue text
A band containing the repeat of an inscription and a tendril curved in reverse S-shape. The embroidery defines the design.
The embroidery is diagonal to the weave structure. As the measurements given above are for the maximum length and width, following the direction of the weave, they are misleading. The fragment's actual measurements are 13.5 cm x 3 cm.In: Barnes, Ruth and Marianne Ellis, ‘The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries’, 4 vols, 2001, Oxford, Ashmolean Museum
