Catalogue text
A continuous field of brown pointed ovals with two types of tendrils inside, and a beaded frame around one version. The fragment is similar to Cat. no. 746 [EA1990.753], but the small circles are missing from the background, and the red of the background is more intense.
There is a remarkable difference in thread-count between the two weave systems. Three stitches hold together a tear in the fabric. The reverse shows less dye saturation than the surface. The length of one side of the block used was 12 cm.In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
