Catalogue text
Chevron design; as in Cat. no. 26 [EA1990.34], the dyed chevrons are emphasized with a trefoil tip. The design therefore is not read as ambiguously as when dyed and white parts complement each other, as in Cat. no. 22 [EA1990.30].
Selvedge. The zigzag of the chevrons moves at a right angle to the selvedge. There are some additional traces of red dye on the reverse, suggesting that the fabric was immersed in a mordant solution. In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
