Page from a dispersed manuscript of Mir ‘Ali Shir Nava’i's Ghara’ib al-Sighar
While illustrations are generally found in the main field of Islamic manuscript pages, the margins could also be superbly decorated as demonstrated by several leaves displayed in this exhibition [see also EA2012.28, EA2012.31, EA2012.33, EA2012.35, EA2012.56, EA2012.28, EA2012.35, and EA2012.56]. On this page, lively groups of hunters, pages, and animals punctuate a hilly landscape outlined in subdued grey and gold tones. Touches of colour are selectively applied to some of the characters revealing their presence through the rocks and trees.
