Khusraw outside Shirin's palace

The story of Khusraw and Shirin, one of the five poems that compose Nizami’s Khamsa or Quintet, recounts the love between the Sasanian king Khusraw and the Armenian princess Shirin. In the painting decorating this page, Shirin refuses to allow Khusraw in her castle on the account of his bad behaviour. The flirtatious behaviour of the young prince upset the princess who decided she would accept his courtship again only if treated with respect. Khusraw eventually returned to her castle with a marriage proposal.
