    The famous Tang dynasty poet Du Fu (712-70) from Sichuan province was the subject of many figure paintings by Fu Baoshi. The first was painted for the poet's former residence in Chengdu while a version in Nanjing Museum and another, in a private collection, are both dated 1964 and bear the same inscription as the present painting.
