Abnormally large guard; raised border of wavy internal profile on each face; edge hammered up; modelled in farily bold low relief with numerous touches of gold incrustation (Minamoto no Tametomo marooned on the Isle of Demons; he sits on a rock by the shore under a huge pine-tree, with two demons on a rock kneeling before him; at back, more of the treee). Signed Kaniye. In the style of early Shōzui work (18th century), but probably early 19th century.
