Tsuba with peach and leaves

  • Catalogue text

Copper of rather dingy patina. Thin; almost square, with rounded edges; pierced in negative sihouette with a peach, one of its leaves, and an oval hole; inlaid on both faces wth the stem and four more of the leaves in gold, silver and shakudō wire; back of seppadai stamped with a small signature: Chūyo [忠世] or Tadachika [忠近].

    H. L. Joly has suggested that this might be Higo work (Group XIII). It is a fine guard, despite the remark about the patina.
