Catalogue text
A continuous design of large linked squares. There are two patterns; one has a central pole and two stylized animals on either side, one above the other, the second design is a stylized flower. The resist defines the design, the background is blue.
The design is a large version of Cat. no. 133 [EA1990.141]. The central pole and stylized animals may represent the tree-of-life motif with flanking animals. Fragments with identical design have been found at Quseir al-Qadim. (See Vogelsang-Eastwood 1990: Cat. nos. 4, 11, 25, 2, 6, 29, 44, 46, 52, & 69.) Also published in Barnes 1990: 188, fig. 2.In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
