The sculptures in the British Museum, the Elgin Marbles, were removed from the temple itself and from the area around it on the Acropolis in 1801-03 by Lord Elgin’s agent Lusieri, and purchased by the British state for the British Museum in 1816 (detailed account of history of the Marbles since antiquity: Palagia, 7-14).
Sculptures from the Temple of Athena, the Parthenon, on the Acropolis of Athens. Classical Greek, 447/6-440 BC (metopes), 440-433/2 BC (pediments) and after 438 BC (frieze). Traces of the colouring remain on some of the original figures, metopes and frieze slabs.
Frieze with procession at Athenian festival. Numbering of individual figures follows Berger and Gisler-Huwiler.

Relief showing three beardless, short-haired men standing around a horse. The man on the left (22) is nude with cloak, the man at centre (23) wears a belted short chiton and mantle. On the right, behind the horse, is a groom (24) with short hair wearing a cloak. Slab 12 from the west frieze.
