Catalogue text
Wu Shixian, also known as Wu Qingyun, painted sombre landscapes in heavy ink after the styles of the 11th- century painter Mi Fu and his fellow native of Nanjing, the 18th- century Gong Xian. His use of western-style chiaroscuro, evident in both these album leaves, is usually attributed to his having spent time in Japan.
