A ring of 12 seal characters, being the names of the animals of the Chinese zodiac, running counter-clockwise.
A similar guard in the Victoria and Albert Museum has large plug-holes of semicircular shape at the ends of the tang-slot. Compare No.692 [EAX.10692].
