Figures in a landscape

Su Liupeng was a native of Shunde County in Guangdong province. When he was young, he studied painting with Monk Dekun in the Luofu Maintains in eastern Guangdong. While there he was inspired by the beauty of nature and had the chance to observe the life of local people including literati, farmers, and street pedlars. In his later years, Su moved to Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong, and made a living by selling his paintings. Su was best known for his lively depictions of everyday people, departing from the traditional subject matter of a literati scholar painter.

Three figure paintings by Su Liupeng (1796-1862) are included in this exhibition. This hanging scroll depicts two scholars enjoying a leisurely moment in a garden.
