Catalogue text
Interlocking spiral design which can also be read as a floral pattern, similar to Cat. no. 288 [EA1990.297]; here a border with small chevrons is included. Visually the pattern is among the most interesting of the collection, as there is a constant oscillation between the red and white areas, as well as between possible focal points.
The pattern is blurred on the reverse. The dye analysis has shown that the colorant used was alzarin with purpurin, the source of which was Rubia tinctorum L. The textile may be 13th century, see Cat. no. 296 [EA1990.305].In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
