Catalogue text
A brown trefoil emerges from two symmetrically placed white leaves; pink stylized leaves with white outlines are arranged around a square containing four brown trefoils. The background is red.
The outlines of the design are irregular and probably drawn by hand. Some parts of the pattern have disintegrated due to the iron content of the mordant. The reverse indicates the use of a resist application prior to mordant dyeing. The dye analysis has shown that the colorant used to produce dark brown, pink, and red was alizarin with purpurin, the source of which was Rubia tinctorum L.In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
