Catalogue text
A continuous design of large circles, each with a red rosette at the centre and filled with tendrils; the circles are linked by small floral crosses, as in Cat. no. 705 [EA1990.712].
The fragment is identical to Cat. no. 705 [EA1990.712]; possibly both were part of the same fabric. The reverse shows less dye saturation than the surface. For further comment and date, see the previous textile [EA1990.712]. The dye analysis has shown that the colorant used was alizarin with purpurin, the source of which was Rubia tinctorum L.In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
