Catalogue text
The seven landscapes and five bird-and-flower paintings are mostly typical of conservative, amateur painting from the mid-19th to early 20th century. The painting illustrated here is signed Old man shihu and dedicated to a Mr. Chun. The recipient may have been known to the artist personally, or may simply have commissioned a painting; fan paintings were often quickly painted to order, and as such seldom represent the artist's most serious work.
