Catalogue text
Fragment of a tiraz cloth, of which the inscription reads: "…'ala yaday Shafi' sana thamani wa…" (under the direction of Shafi' in the year (30)8/920 AD).
The inscription's reference to Shafi' and the date relate this tiraz textile to one in the Textile Museum, Washington D.C., to a second one in the Benaki Museum, Athens, as well as to a third tiraz in the Dumbarton Oaks collection. Shafi' was director or intendant at the tiraz factory at Tinnis. In: Barnes, Ruth and Marianne Ellis, ‘The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries’, 4 vols, 2001, Oxford, Ashmolean Museum
