Fan with goldfish
Liu Zhaojun is a contemporary female artist, born in Shanghai, but now working in Hong Kong as a professional art teacher. In her seal on this fan she has named herself Yuan, which shows her admiration for the 20th-century master Zhang Daqian (1899-1983). The inscribed characters read ‘the dancing of phoenix’, which compare the elegant movement of goldfish in water to that of phoenix in the sky. In addition to the painting, the fine decoration on the wooden frame is a notable demonstration of skilful craftsmanship.
