Landscape with two figures sitting under trees
Qian Gu, whose courtesy name is Shubao and alternative name Qingshi, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province and was a pupil of the Ming dynasty master painter Wen Zhengming (1470-1559). He is best known for his calligraphy, landscape, and bamboo-and-orchid painting.
An inscription on the last page [EA2012.185.l] indicates that the paintings in this album are imitating Yuan period masters. It is possible that the artist refers to Ni Zan (1301-1374) and Huang Gongwang (1269-1354).
The collector’s seal shows that the album used to be in Ou Zhenxiong’s (1917-1994) collection. He lived in Hong Kong and was known for his collection and connoisseurship of Chinese paintings and calligraphy.
