Catalogue text
Fu Baoshi painted figures similar to this during the 1940s when his subjects were taken from early literature, including the Nine Songs of the Eastern Zhou (771-221 BC) dynasty. One of these depicts the Lady of Xiang, daughter of the legendary Emperor Yao and subject of one of the Nine songs, while another is a mountain spirit. The style derives from Tang (618-906) figure painting.
