Catalogue text
Jin Nong was born in Renhe (present day Hangzhou) and is known as one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, where he settled in 1748 following the death of his wife. He is known to have begun painting seriously at the age of fifty, possibly as a result of his failure in 1736 to pass the official examinations in Peking.
