Tankard

On display

The inscriptions on the lid can be translated 'the gift of Thomas Clerke, gentleman' and 'loving cup in eternal memory WW'. Commemorative inscriptions of this nature are relatively uncommon on seventeenth-century plate bequeathed to individuals.

Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
