Red Glow
Woven silk image after a painting dated May 1964 by Luo Qi. The righthand border of the painting gives the title and artist’s name; the inscription on the painting gives the title followed by: ‘painted in May 1964, Luo Qi’. The writing on the lefthand border gives the place of production: ‘made in Hangzhou brocade weaving factory, China’. The image is woven in black and white, with colour applied by hand. This technique was used in conjunction with fine tapestry weaving from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) onwards, though at that period just for fine details.
