Catalogue text
A band with two oval medallions with tendril-ends, separated by a cluster of four linked rosettes, all with white outlines against a red ground. The band has borders with a zigzag line in each, brown on a white ground. The pattern is similar to one of the bands in Cat. no. 651 [EA1990.657].
Remains of some stitching in blue and white suggest that there once were tabs attached to the fabric. The reverse is slightly blurred, suggesting the use of a reserve. The dye analysis has shown that the colorant used was alizarin with purpurin, the source of which was Rubia tinctorum L.In: Barnes, Ruth, Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2 vols (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997)
