Standing portrait of Sultan Abu'l Hasan of Golconda
Abu’l-Hasan of Golconda (ruled 1673-1687), whose fine portrait is presented here, was the last sultan of the Qutb-Shahi kingdom located in the region of Deccan, central India. Elegantly clad and depicted in profile smelling a rose - a recurring formula for the portraits of rulers across the Islamic world - the sultan is best known for his rebellion against the Mughal Emperors. The region of Deccan was eventually annexed to the Mughal Empire in 1687, after Awrangzeb (ruled 1658-1707) invaded the region and made Abu’l-Hasan captive.
