Catalogue text
Yu Fei'an was a traditional painter active in Peking in the early twentieth century. The flat red and green colour within hard black outlines is typical of his flower painting style, which derives ultimately from Song (960-1279) court painting. Yu Fei'an, somewhat unusually for a Chinese painter, was particularly interested in colour and is the author of a book on the subject.
