Textile fragment with medallions, linked rosettes, vines, and tabs

Details

  • Catalogue text

Border bands at right angles, with two patterns: one with a continuous vine and separate leaves, white against a brown background, the other with medallions and clusters of linked rosettes, white on a pink ground. Both types of bands have a zigzag edge; the continuous vine is found four times, the medallion band once. In addition there are three tabs, two of which have a stylized tree-of-life motif, the third cross-hatching which can also be read as rows of diagonal stars, as in Cat. nos. 167 and 168 [EA1990.175 and EA1990.176].

The fragment is made up from two pieces sewn together with white thread, probably flax. The seam is done with neat stitches. The tabs are hemmed with blue flax thread, and there is some coarse mending done with black cotton. The reverse shows more dye saturation than the surface. The block size for the band with a continuous vine was 18 cm. x 5 cm.
