Bottle with fabulous beasts

Blue and white wares produced under the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) were regularly imported to the Middle East and left an indelible mark on the Islamic ceramic production from the late 15th century onwards. The bottle and water pipe base seen here [see also EA2012.116] exemplify the level of assimilation of Chinese motifs into the Persian figurative repertoire. The compositional approach to the vessels’ surfaces, divided in bands and framed by strips of panels and lobed medallions, also closely follow far-eastern examples.
