Textile fragment with concentric circles, triangles, and dots

Details

  • Catalogue text

A fragment of a circle or medallion, made up from red, blue, and white concentric circles filled with triangles and dots. The background has a large, red tendril surrounded by small, white lines on a blue ground; the design is similar to Cat. no. 1042 [EA1990.1049]. There also is a sequence of red and white bands, with diamonds and medallions, and some blue details, as in that fragment [EA1990.1049]. In addition, there is a second band with a continuous red vine on a white ground, similar to Cat. no. 1034 [EA1990.1041]; the design is also comparable to Cat. no. 1128 [EA1990.1035].

The reverse shows more dye saturation than the surface. It is possible that the resist was at least partly applied by hand, rather than using a block.
